I denne boka, Med lik i lasten? Subjekt og modernitet i Jonas Lies romanunivers, er en rekke av Jonas Lies romaner lest på en måte som utfordrer en mere tradisjonell overlevering. Fra egen rystende erfaring visste forfatteren noe om de mørke skygger som også framskrittet kan kaste foran seg. De samme krefter som skaper stadig mer ekspansjon og tilsynelatende gir økt spillerom for individet, bidrar også til individets avmakt og ensomgjøring. "Liket i lasten" er en metafor for den kulturkrisen Jonas Lie som forfatter avdekket i sin romankunst. En av hans siste romaner, Naar Jernteppet falder (1901), handler om et kjempeskips varslede undergang på vei mot Den Nye Verden. Med denne boka innvarslet Jonas Lie også det store forlis som i 1912 rammet dampvidunderet ­ Titanic og de mytiske drømmer dette skipet var lastet med.

This is a corpus-based study of the relative order of subject and finite verb in declarative main clauses introduced by an element other than the subject. The data are derived from approximately 3,000 pages of prose texts dating from c. 1480 to c. 1730, and the aim is to examine English word order as reflected in the corpus and the diachronic changes that may be evident during the period concerned. The investigation shows that verb-second order was quite common till the end of the 16th century, and a very radical change in the order of subject and finite verb appears to have taken place as late as the 17th century, in particular during the middle years of that century. In the development from verb-second to verb-medial order pragmatic factors appear to have been of crucial importance, favouring verbsecond order in some cases and verb-medial in others. The investigation discusses such features as subject realization, type of verb, the distribution of given and new information and the principles of end focus and end weight. On the whole, word order is shown to be governed by a complex interplay of a number of factors, and it may be safely concluded that a variety of features will have contributed to the sequential organization of a given sentence. I denne boka er det lagt vekt på å vise spennvidda i produksjonen til snikkaren og bygdekunstnaren Aslak Olsen Lie (1798-1886). På denne måten har det vore mogeleg å få fram mykje av dei reelle vilkåra for ein representant for denne generasjonen bygdekunstnarar her i landet. At vi kan følgje den same personen etter at han utvandra til Amerika, gjev «snedker Lie» ein ny dimensjon. Vi får fram biletet av ein handverkar og bygdekunstnar i stadig tilpassing til nye rammevilkår. Det har vore lagt vekt på å setja materialet inn i kjende etnologiske og kunsthistoriske samanhengar, og ein har dokumentert prossessar som elles er vanskelege å påvise med konkrete døme frå den materielle kulturen. Det er vona at somme av problemstillingane i boka også kan førast vidare, og at boka såleis kan vera til nytte for vidare gransking innan temaet «bygdekunst» eller «folkekunst» både her i landet og i Amerika.

Within the last two hundred years critical scholarship has come to recognise that chapters 40-55 of the Old Testament Book of Isaiah do not go back to the same milieu and time as chapters 1-39, but were written in Babylonia during the period of the so-called Babylonian exile, following Nebuchadnezzar’s conquest of Jerusalem in 586 B.C. The author of the present monograph has previously on several occasions challenged the view that Isa 40-55 originated in Babylonia and has pointed to Palestine as the most likely background for this important Biblical text. The main conclusion of this new study is that none of the l9th century arguments (still prevailing in recent scholarship) in favour of a Babylonian setting of Isa 40-55 are acceptable today. The "Babylonian Isaiah", consequently, provides us with an illustrating example of how a thesis has continued to have a strong influence long after the presuppositions which once led its birth have ceased to be valid. Since the placing of chapters 40-55 of the Book of Isaiah in a Babylonian rather than a Palestinian context has also had a profound effect on how this text should be understood, The Babylonian Captivity of the Book of Isaiah represents a much needed and long overdue corrective to the whole Second Isaian debate. This book brings together two rather esoteric topics: whaling and industrial archaeology. The focus is on the remains of the shore whaling stations on South Georgia in the Southern Ocean - a centre of Antarctic whaling for the first half of the 20th century. Being left to deteriorate primarily through natural processes, most of the whaling stations still, decades after business closed, have an authenticity that few industrial remains in more populated areas of the world can offer. The book reviews a research project on the industrial archaeology on South Georgia and places the project in a wider context. It reviews the history of South Georgia from the early discoveries, the sealing industry of the 19th century, the whaling industry of the 20th century and the development afterwards, when the attitude towards the former whaling stations gradually shifted from being seen as mere scrap to being considered cultural heritage.The main part of the book describes and analyses how the whaling stations were designed and operated. The emphasis is on the main functions and functional relationships: the processing plant, the power supply, workshops, accommodation and recreational facilities.

Tyske bergmenn reiste omkring 1540 til det indre av Telemark. De prøvde å få rikdommer i form av sølv og kobber ut av magre ertsforekomster. Levekårene var vanskelige. Boka følger Norsk Bergverksmuseums forskning i gulnede dokumenter og i felt, til Fjellgardane i Fyresdalsheiene der det ble gjort oppsiktsvekkende funn av et skjerpefelt med tallrike spor etter bergmennenes virksomhet. Godt bevarte redskaper ble funnet. Skjerp og gjenstander er minner fra en arbeidskultur på høyt nivå i renessansens Mellomeuropa.

Bjørn Ivar Berg (f. 1955) er historiker og fra 1989 førstekonservator og forsker ved Norsk Bergverksmuseum på Kongsberg. Cand. philol. 1982 og dr. philos. 1996 fra Universitetet i Oslo med avhandlingen "Gruveteknikk ved Kongsberg Sølvverk 1623-1914". Utga i 2005 boken "Glemte mennesker. Bergmannsslekten Bratteberg på Kongsberg 1742-1812" (Novus forlag) om vanlige folks privatliv og arbeidsliv på bergstaden.

In Semiotics from the North. Nordic approaches to systemic functional linguistics sixteen articles are presented which are especially written for this book by seventeen scholars from Denmark, Norway and Sweden. The articles are written in gratitude and admiration to Michael Halliday who has inspired these scholars in many ways, both through his research and publications and through his personal interest and engagement. Halliday has visited the Nordic countries several times, and shown great interest for the linguistic work going on at universities and university colleges in Denmark, Norway and Sweden. The authors of this book have different backgrounds, but they all share a deep interest for Michael Halliday’s social semiotics and functional linguistics. The collection of articles shows great variety of research interests; they discuss several grammatical questions and different aspects of children’s language development, and they present analysis of different kinds of texts in society and school, also in a multimodal perspective. Systemic functional linguistics is, however, the basis and inspiration of all the articles. The book gives a good overview of the work going on in SFL in Denmark, Norway and Sweden today. The articles are also useful for students interested in different areas of functional linguistics.

Which opportunities for language learning are being created?This book offers illuminating portrayals of two multicultural classrooms in the Netherlands and Norway. Drawing on observations, interviews, and documents, it presents in-depth analyses of episodes capturing concrete interactions in various classroom settings, including the regular class and special classes for languageminority pupils. Adopting a cross-national perspective, it sheds light on the discursive realities of teaching and learning language in multicultural classrooms and explores their relations to national andlocal policies and theories. In doing so, the book provides important insights into the education of language minoritypupils.

A Centenary of Slavic Studies in NorwayThe year 1896 when Olaf Broch was appointed Reader in Oslo (then Kristiania), marks the starting point of Slavic studies in Norway at university level. The centenary, intimately linked with Broch’s name, was solemnly celebrated at an international symposium in September 1996 on the premises of the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters where Broch had been Secretary General for more than twenty years (1924-45). Opening addresses were given by the Rector of the University of Oslo, Professor Dr. Lucy Smith, and the President of the Academy, Professor Dr. Bjarne Waaler. A speech of welcome was delivered by the Chairman of the Department of East European and Oriental Studies at the University of Oslo, Professor Dr. Jan Ivar Bjørnflaten. Twenty-two papers were read by distinguished scholars from 15 countries, both from Europe and overseas. Some of the papers were devoted to linguistic topics investigated by Broch and underscored his pioneering, often innovating achievements, whereas others were not directly associated with Broch’s work. The symposium was arranged as part of the series of Academy symposia. Both due to this fact as well as to the special role of Olaf Broch at the Academy, the contributions are published in the Skrifter utgitt av Det Norske VidenskapsAkademi. II. Hist.-Filos. Klasse. The volume appears as the result of a fruitful cooperation between the Department of East European and Oriental Studies and the Academy.
